📐 What's involved in designing a cover

📄 Interior Design: How the Price Is Calculated

The rate is calculated either per page or as a flat fee, depending on the complexity of the content. A novel without illustrations is formatted differently from a technical book that includes tables, diagrams, and footnotes.

🔧 What makes the price different

Two projects with the same number of pages can have very different rates.

📝
Number of pages
Direct basis for calculation. The longer the book, the larger the project.
📄
File format supplied
A well-structured Word document (with Heading 1, Heading 2, etc., styles) is less expensive to integrate than a PDF or a document without a hierarchical structure.
🔄
Correction back and forth
Generally, 2 to 3 cycles are included. Beyond that, hourly fees apply.
📚
Multiple versions
Print + ebook (EPUB or accessible PDF) = two separate layouts.
Emergency
A tight deadline on a large project may result in an additional charge.
🎨
Typographic charter
Without an existing style guide, the graphic designer creates styles, fonts, and visual guidelines from scratch.

💶 Flat-rate fee or per-page billing

Option A
Per-page billing
The final rate is adjusted based on the actual volume delivered. This is appropriate when the manuscript is still a work in progress or the number of pages has not yet been finalized.
Recommended when
Content is still being finalized; additions or deletions may be made
Option B
Total package
A budget set from the start. Greater transparency for the client, better planning for the graphic designer.
Recommended when
Specified number of pages, fixed content, layout approved before starting
⚠️
Point of attention: Specify in the quote what triggers additional charges: adding pages after the purchase order is placed, changes to the text itself, and additional versions.

⚖️ Freelance, agency or Canva: which to choose?

Option A
Template Canva / DIY

Virtually no cost, generic results. The files do not always comply with printing standards (resolution, bleed, CMYK).

Option C
Agency

This is a good option if the book is part of an overall branding strategy. Higher prices and often longer turnaround times.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, a graphic designer with experience in publishing can prepare the files to the printer’s exact specifications (PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-3, ICC profile, 300 dpi resolution, 3 mm bleed) and coordinate the submission. This service can be included in the quote or billed as an optional service.

Word (.docx) is the standard format. A structured document with heading styles applied (Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.) reduces layout time and, therefore, costs. An unstructured document requires more preparation work.

Generally, two to three rounds of revisions are included in the quote. Beyond that, hourly rates apply. Revisions are limited to layout only, unless otherwise specified.

The prices shown are exclusive of tax (HT). For sole proprietors subject to VAT, VAT at a rate of 20 % applies. Please verify based on the service provider’s status at the time the quote is issued.

Yes, and that's generally recommended. Working on both together ensures visual consistency. A package deal is often more cost-effective than placing separate orders.
